Lithium-ion batteries, while crucial for powering electric vehicles and electronics, are not safe for the environment. One major concern is the mining process for lithium, a key component.  Lithium mining destroys ecosystems and permanently pollutes water sources with toxic chemicals and heavy metals.  Furthermore, mining practices, particularly cobalt extraction, have been linked to human rights abuses.

Adding to the issue is lithium battery disposal.  These batteries contain toxic materials like cobalt and nickel.  If they end up in landfills, these materials can leach out and contaminate soil and water.
